New Road Overbridge at Panbazar built by NF Railway to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Assam

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is pleased to announce the inauguration of the newly constructed Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Panbazar, Guwahati, on 27th September,by Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma,Chief Minister of Assam, in the august presence of state dignitaries, the General Manager of NFR and several senior officials from the Railways and State Government. The ROB has been built at a cost of Rs. 47 crore and stands 290 metres long, featuring a wide carriageway along with 1.5-metre footpaths on both sides. Equipped with advanced engineering elements such as a 60-metre Bow String Girder and composite girders, the structure ensures improved vertical and horizontal clearances for transportation. This will allow smooth movement of trains, including electric locomotives and over-dimensional consignments, while simultaneously helping to ease road congestion in the busy Panbazar?Paltan Bazar corridor in Guwahati.

The old Panbazar ROB, constructed in 1965, had served the city for nearly six decades but had become inadequate due to its narrow width, low clearance and frequent waterlogging. These shortcomings not only created severe traffic congestions but also disrupted electrified train operations. To address these issues and meet the growing transport needs of the state capital city, NFR initiated the replacement project in March 2024. Despite the complexity of dismantling and modern construction, the project was completed successfully within a span of 18 months in August 2025.With the commissioning of this important project, Guwahati gains a vital infrastructure that promises safer, fasterand more reliable connectivity. The new Panbazar ROB will not only benefit citizens and road users but also facilitate faster train operations, support the re-modelling of Guwahati Railway Station, and strengthen multimodal transport. This milestone achievement stands as a testimony to NFR commitment towards boosting connectivity and promoting economic growth in Assam and the Northeast.
