EASTERN RAILWAY COMBINES STRICT ENFORCEMENT AND AWARENESS TO PROMOTE CLEANLINESS

15,493 Individuals Detected for littering, ₹26,45,552 realised as fine from 1st April to 15th June 2025

Eastern Railway is making concerted efforts to ensure cleanliness across station premises and maintain waste-free tracks throughout its network. Despite challenges?particularly at suburban stations with high passenger footfall?the Railway remains committed to providing a cleaner, safer, and more pleasant travel environment.

One of the major hurdles in this mission is the persistent issue of indiscriminate littering and spitting by some passengers and station users. Such behavior not only tarnishes the appearance of railway premises but also poses serious environmental and operational concerns.

To address this, Eastern Railway has undertaken extensive awareness campaigns at various stations, sensitising passengers to the importance of maintaining cleanliness. These campaigns are conducted regularly with the active involvement of the Health Department, Railway Protection Force (RPF), and station staff.

Alongside awareness efforts, strict enforcement measures have also been implemented. From 1st April to 15th June 2025, a total of 15,493 individuals were detected for littering under Eastern Railway?s jurisdiction, leading to the realisation of ₹26,45,552 as fines under relevant provisions of the Railway Act.

Division-wise summary of individuals fined for littering (01.04.2025 ? 15.06.2025):

Howrah Division: 3,905 persons detained, ₹6,91,452 realised as fine.

Sealdah Division: 5,509 persons detained, ₹8,98,600 realised as fine.

Asansol Division: 4,448 persons detained, ₹7,63,400 realised as fine.

Malda Division: 1,631 persons detained, ₹2,92,100 realised as fine.

Eastern Railway appeals to all passengers to cooperate in its cleanliness initiatives by using dustbins, avoiding spitting, and refraining from littering in station areas. A cleaner railway is not only the responsibility of the authorities but also a reflection of the civic sense of its users.
