Supreme Court Quashes FIRs Against Samay Raina Over ‘India’s Got Latent’ Remarks

New Delhi: In a major relief for comedian and content creator Samay Raina, the Supreme Court on Friday quashed the criminal cases registered against him and four others over allegedly insensitive remarks concerning persons with disabilities during the controversial show India?s Got Latent.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice J.V. Mohana Prasad took note of the efforts made by Raina and the other accused to comply with the directions issued by the court and subsequently ordered that the FIRs against them be quashed.

The cases stemmed from remarks made during an episode of India?s Got Latent, which triggered widespread criticism and legal complaints. The controversy particularly involved alleged insensitive comments concerning people suffering from disabilities, including references to the high cost of treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had reprimanded Raina over the nature of the jokes and directed him and the other accused to undertake awareness initiatives and raise funds for persons with disabilities. The court had also sought meaningful efforts from them to address the concerns raised by the petition.

During Friday?s hearing, the bench acknowledged the initiatives undertaken by Raina and his associates for the benefit of persons with disabilities. The court observed that genuine efforts in a positive direction could produce constructive results.

The bench reportedly noted that the accused were young and that their efforts could lead to positive outcomes if they continued working in the right direction.

The Supreme Court?s latest order brings relief to Raina and the other individuals named in the proceedings, following their compliance with the directions issued during the earlier hearings.

The petition before the top court had been filed by the Cure SMA India Foundation. It alleged that Raina had made insensitive comments about the cost of treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy and had allegedly ridiculed a person living with the condition.

Apart from Raina, the proceedings also involved social media personalities Vipun Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar.

The controversial episode of India?s Got Latent was recorded in November and subsequently became the subject of intense public debate. Raina and other participants associated with the show faced multiple complaints and cases over allegations relating to obscene and insensitive content.

With the Supreme Court now quashing the FIRs after taking note of the compliance and corrective initiatives, the prolonged legal controversy surrounding the episode has reached a significant conclusion for Raina and the other accused.

The development marks a major legal relief for the comedian, while also highlighting the court?s emphasis on constructive corrective measures and social responsibility alongside legal proceedings.
